Roots and Branches

My own tree now boasts over 2500 names. Not all blood relations of course, but they are all family in one way or another.
I have so far discovered family in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and The USA. The american branch was discovered before I even started my research and are, so far, the only overseas relatives that I have actually met.
My longest line, or deepest root, goes right back to 1578 and the reign of Elizabeth the 1st. The relative in question being my 12x Great Grandfather.
So....if you're thinking of starting to trace your tree I'd be happy to help. Contact me at statonfamilyhistory@gmail.com for details of rates and services.

Origin of The Staton Name

My research into this has been fairly inconclusive!

One side of the argument suggests it is of German origin. The house of names website states that it was "first found in Baden and Augsburg where the name was anciently associated with the tribal conflicts of the area."

A more believable suggestion from Ancestry.com is that it is "English (South Yorkshire and East Midlands): Apparently a habitational name, possibly a variant of Statham."

Given the fact that the highest population density of the name is centered around Sheffield and, more precisely, Mosborough and Eckington, I would be more inclined to believe the Ancestry version.
By the way, I wonder who the cute little fella in the photo is? He looks quite familiar, but I just can't place him! Any ideas?

Its a Small World

One of the things I've discovered whilst researching my family history is that the person sat opposite you at work could be a relative or that your boss could be your cousin!
Both of these have happened to me, or more accurately, to members of my family. I discovered that a distant cousin had my younger brother for his boss and, more recently, that one of my wife's colleagues also has a connection to my tree, albeit very tenuous! It was quite lucky for her though, as the line which connected us goes all the way back to 1580!
Its a small world and getting smaller!

Keith.

Where to Begin?

That is the question!

I have been doing my own family tree for several years now. It tends to go in bursts where you find one little piece of information which leads to much more and then comes to a dead-end, almost literally in some cases!

I have found black sheep and semi-famous family members on both sides of my family and would be happy to share information researching the same lines.

My Staton line is currently stuck around the late 18th century, where birth and death dates become quite ambiguous!
