Roots and Branches

My own tree now boasts over 2500 names. Not all blood relations of course, but they are all family in one way or another.
I have so far discovered family in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and The USA. The american branch was discovered before I even started my research and are, so far, the only overseas relatives that I have actually met.
My longest line, or deepest root, goes right back to 1578 and the reign of Elizabeth the 1st. The relative in question being my 12x Great Grandfather.
So....if you're thinking of starting to trace your tree I'd be happy to help. Contact me at statonfamilyhistory@gmail.com for details of rates and services.

Origin of The Staton Name

My research into this has been fairly inconclusive!

One side of the argument suggests it is of German origin. The house of names website states that it was "first found in Baden and Augsburg where the name was anciently associated with the tribal conflicts of the area."

A more believable suggestion from Ancestry.com is that it is "English (South Yorkshire and East Midlands): Apparently a habitational name, possibly a variant of Statham."

Given the fact that the highest population density of the name is centered around Sheffield and, more precisely, Mosborough and Eckington, I would be more inclined to believe the Ancestry version.
By the way, I wonder who the cute little fella in the photo is? He looks quite familiar, but I just can't place him! Any ideas?
